First/initial examinations of drivers of the first group – amateurs

The following must be brought to the first examination:

  • ID card
  • certificate of the chosen medical doctor not older than 1 month (excerpt from the health record regarding the current state of health)
  • medical documentation/medical report if you suffer from some diseases/conditions
  • glasses and/or contact lenses (if you use them)
  • it is not necessary to come on an empty stomach

The basic medical examination for amateur drivers includes a psychological assessment, an eye examination and examination by an occupational medicine specialist.

Regular examinations of amateur drivers

(for renewal of driver’s license A1, A2, A, B, BE, F, G, AM category)

The following must be brought to the examination:

  • ID card
  • old/expired driver's license
  • certificate of the chosen medical doctor not older than 1 month (excerpt from the health record regarding the current state of health)
  • medical documentation/medical report if you suffer from some diseases/conditions
  • glasses and/or contact lenses (if you use them)
  • it is not necessary to come on an empty stomach

If it is about extending the driver’s license due to the wearing of glasses/contact lenses, it is necessary to take them with you to the examination, as the eyesight is examined and conclude the examination by an occupational medicine specialist.

  • bring an ID card or passport
  • bring a certificate from the selected medical doctor not older than 1 month (except from the medical record regarding the current state of health)
  • bring medical documentation/medical report if you suffer from some diseases/conditions
  • bring glasses and/or contact lenses (if you use them)

The basic medical examination for a professional driver includes a clinical examination by an occupational medicine specialist, vision examination, nyctometry, ECG, spirometry, audiometry, laboratory findings of blood and urine and psychological assessment.

Do I need to have a medical examination every time I renew my driver's license?

According to the Law on Road Traffic Safety (NN 67/08, 48/10, 74/11, 80/13, 158/13, 92/14, 64/15, 108/17, 70/19, 42/20, 85 /22, 114/22) driver’s license for driving AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, F and G category vehicles is issued with a validity period of 10 years. When renewing the driver’s license, the driver is obliged to undergo a medical examination for the driver in the case where the obligation of the medical examination is determined by the health certificate on the basis of which the driver’s license was issued. Driving license for driving vehicles of categories C, C1, C+E, C1+E, D1, D1+E, D, D+E and H is issued with a validity period of five years. At the end of the five-year period, the driver referred to in this paragraph, when renewing his driver’s license, is required to undergo a driver’s medical examination. Driving licenses for driving instructors and category B drivers who drive a vehicle for professional purposes are issued with a validity period of 10 years. At the end of the ten-year period, the driver from this paragraph and the driving instructor when renewing the driver’s license are obliged to undergo a medical examination for drivers.

Exceptionally, a driver’s license is issued with a shorter period of validity if the driver’s medical examination certificate establishes the driver’s medical fitness for a shorter period of time, and when renewing the driver’s license, the driver is obliged to undergo a driver’s medical examination.

How long is the medical certificate valid?

The medical certificate of medical fitness  for driver candidates (signing up in a driving school) is valid for 15 months from the date of issue. If you do not pass the driving test in the specified period, the specified certificate can no longer be accepted, you need to repeat the medical examination for the same. A medical certificate of medical fitness  for the renewal of a driver’s license is valid for 6 months from the date of issue, and upon the expiry of the validity of the certificate, a medical examination is performed again.

What does the medical examination for a driver's license consist of?

The health examination of amateur drivers (Ai B category) includes an examination of visual functions (sight examination), and these examinations of drivers also include a psychological assessment and a clinical examination by an occupational medicine specialist. Additional tests are performed on the indication of the same specialist. For professional drivers (categories C and D), in addition to the above-mentioned examinations, laboratory analysis of blood and urine, hearing test, spirometry and ECG are performed.

When is an outstanding surveillance medical examination performed?

An outstanding surveillance medical checkup is done if necessary at the request of the MUP – Ministry of Internal Affairs (due to the use of alcohol or psychoactive substances) or when your family doctor reports to the MUP that there has been a change in the state of health that may endanger the safe driving of a motor vehicle.
